Frequently Asked Questions
Ordering, prices and weights, cutting to specification, delivery, payment, storage and food safety. If your question is not here, call us - we would rather talk to you.
Ordering
Four ways, all of which end up in the same place. Build a basket on this site and tap "Send Order on WhatsApp" - your itemised list arrives with us instantly. Message us directly on WhatsApp. Call 0707 700511 and read your list out. Or walk in to Stall 55 at City Market - open Monday to Saturday 6:30am - 7:00pm, and Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm.
No, and there is no password to create. The My Account page simply saves your delivery details, favourite cuts and past orders on your own device so checkout is quicker next time - we never see any of it until you send us an order. If you would rather we kept a customer record and a standing weekly order at our end, call the stall and we will set one up.
There is no general minimum. Very small orders may carry a delivery charge that makes collection more sensible, and we will always tell you the cost before dispatch. Samosas and mshikaki have a ten-piece minimum because of how they are made.
You can send a WhatsApp order at any time - we read and cut it when we open. For same-day delivery, order before 4:00pm; later orders go out the following morning. The counter is open Monday to Saturday 6:30am - 7:00pm and Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm.
A day is enough for most things. Two days for mshikaki, because the marinade needs that time. A few days for a whole goat, a side of lamb, or specialist butchery like a French-trimmed rack or crown roast. Call 0707 700511 and we will work the quantities out with you - that conversation is free.
Yes, and we will hold your order chilled at the stall at no charge until you arrive. Very popular with customers who work in the CBD: buy at lunchtime, collect on your way home. Just tell us roughly what time to expect you.
Prices, weights and cutting
Meat is sold by weight, and because we cut to order the final weight will be close to but not exactly what you asked for. We weigh after cutting, then message you the exact total before anything is dispatched. Nothing is ever charged without you seeing the figure first.
Yes. Delivery is charged separately as a flat fee by area - see the fee table.
Yes, and this is the single biggest reason to buy from a butcher. Steak thickness, trim level, boning, rolling and tying, butterflying a leg of lamb, French-trimming a rack, ossobucco sawn thick, short ribs English or flanken cut, mince ground coarse or fine. None of it costs extra. Put it in the notes box at checkout or just tell us what you are cooking.
As a working rule: 200-250g boneless per adult with rice, ugali or vegetables alongside; 300-400g if the meat is the centre of the plate; 400-500g for bone-in cuts such as T-bone, ribs or shoulder. For twenty people at a choma, think 7-10kg. Call us with a headcount and we will build the list with you.
Plenty. Soup bones, beef mince, brisket, chuck, blade, goat head, goat legs for mutura, mutton shoulder, lamb racks, chicken necks and feet, cheese and veg samosas, chicken sausages, and turkey, duck, crab, octopus and calamari to order. The website is a summary; the counter is bigger.
Delivery
Yes, every day of the week. We cover the CBD, Westlands, Parklands, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Runda, Muthaiga, Gigiri, Karen, Langata and the areas around them. See all the areas we serve, or ask us about yours.
Flat delivery fees by area, from KSh 300 to KSh 1,000 depending on where you are - added to your total the moment you choose your area, never sprung on you at the door. Anywhere we do not list, we quote you before we dispatch. You see the exact figure the moment you choose your area in the basket, so it is never a surprise at your door. See the full fee table.
Same day for orders placed before 4:00pm; next morning for later orders. Nearby areas are often within the hour. Karen and Langata are our longest run, so a day's notice helps. Tell us a preferred time window and we will do our best to hit it.
Yes. Everything is packed chilled and insulated straight from our cold room at City Market and delivered direct. If an order ever arrives less than properly cold, tell us and we will replace it.
Give us the building or estate name, block, house or unit number and a contact phone. Our rider calls from the gate or guardhouse and will wait for you. We can also leave with a household manager or a guard if that is your arrangement - just tell us in advance.
Payment
Four ways, and we confirm the exact total before you pay: M-Pesa on dispatch (pay before we send it - best if you are ordering for someone else or will not be there), M-Pesa on delivery, cash on delivery, and card on delivery (Visa / Mastercard). M-Pesa is Buy Goods till 700511 (Kamundia Butchery City Market Stall 55 Nairobi). Full payment details.
Lipa na M-Pesa → Buy Goods and Services → till number 700511 → the amount we have confirmed → your PIN. The name that comes up is Kamundia Butchery City Market Stall 55 Nairobi, so you know it is us. You can pay on dispatch (before we send the order) or on delivery.
Not at the moment you click, because meat is sold by weight and cut to order, so the final figure is confirmed after cutting - not before. Instead we cut, weigh, send you the exact total, and you pay by M-Pesa or card on delivery, or M-Pesa on dispatch. It avoids ever being charged for a weight you did not receive.
Yes. Restaurants, hotels, schools, canteens and butcheries can run a trade account with agreed pricing, standing weekly orders and invoiced payment terms. See wholesale and bulk supply or call 0707 700511.
Yes, always - at the counter and with deliveries. Trade customers are invoiced.
Quality, storage and safety
Fresh and chilled. We take in whole carcasses, hang them in our own cold room and cut to order, so nothing has been sitting portioned in a chiller. We will freeze meat for you on request, but nothing is sold frozen unless you ask.
We buy whole carcasses from suppliers we have used for years and break them down ourselves at City Market. Our Norwegian salmon is imported. Ask us at the counter about anything specific - we can tell you.
Whole beef, goat and lamb cuts: 3-4 days. Chicken, mince, offal and deli items: 1-2 days. Fish: 1 day, ideally cooked the day you buy it. Store in the coldest part of the fridge, loosely covered.
Portion into meal sizes, press flat, wrap tightly to exclude air, and label with the date - flat parcels freeze and thaw far faster than blocks. Thaw overnight in the fridge, never on the counter or in warm water, and never refreeze thawed raw meat.
No. Washing raw poultry spreads bacteria around your sink and worktop and removes nothing that cooking would not kill. Pat it dry with paper towel instead - and dry skin crisps far better.
Please ask us directly on 0707 700511 about the current position on halal supply, so you get an accurate answer for the day you are ordering rather than a general claim from a website.
The butchery
City Market, Ground Floor, Stall 55 Muindi Mbingu St, Nairobi, beside Jamia Mosque in the Nairobi CBD. Plus code PR89+JW Nairobi. Open seven days a week: Monday to Saturday 6:30am - 7:00pm, and Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm. Full directions.
Since 1959 - sixty-five years and three generations on the same stall at City Market. Read our story.
Yes - everything in the delicatessen section is made in our own deli from the meat on our own counter. Beef sausages, beef and chicken burger patties, meatballs, hand-folded beef and chicken samosas, and marinated beef mshikaki.
Yes - fresh raw bones at KSh 150 per kg, the cheapest thing we sell, plus offal and trim. Tell us your dog's size and we will match the bone. Always feed raw, never cooked, and always supervised. See the pet food section.
Call 0707 700511 and tell us. If we cut something wrong, sent the wrong item, or an order arrived less than properly cold, we replace it. We have been trading on repeat custom since 1959; getting this right matters more to us than the value of any single order.
Nice to meat you
Ask us anything about meat
Sixty-five years behind the block means there is very little about buying, cutting, storing or cooking meat we have not been asked before. Try us.
